As is the case with much of Tezuka’s work, the main plot of Nextworld deals with Earth in the Atomic Age. Radiation and nuclear testing has led to the creation of many strange, almost supernatural species of animals, and it seems that every major nation on the planet wants to discover the secrets of these creatures and how to best harness atomic energy for their own purposes. Tensions rise as political conflicts escalate, and it seems that a third World War is inevitable. A strange mix of scientists, politicians, and young adventurers may be Earth’s last, best hope against corrupt government officials, armed forces, robots, and secret societies. Set in a "futuristic, yet feudal Japan," and stars a samurai named Afro for his hair. The story follows Afro as he tries to avenge his father's murder. In the world of Afro Samurai, it is said that the one who becomes "Number One", will rule the world, wielding powers akin to a god. Someone becomes Number One by killing the previous Number One and taking his ceremonial headband. However, the only rule in this world is that only the "Number Two" (also designated by a sacred headband) is allowed to fight the "Number One." Afro Samurai's father was the old Number One, until he was challenged by a gunman, "Justice" (who was then Number Two), who fought him in a duel to become the new Number One. At the time the gunman challenged his father, Afro had only been a child. The gunman severed his father's head right in front of the young Afro. Now an adult, Afro Samurai is the current Number Two and a master swordsman; he travels the road seeking revenge on Justice, the current Number One. Lengthy flashbacks interspersed throughout the story detail how Afro rose from frightened boy fleeing the death of his father, to master swordsman, and eventually to become the current "Number Two", while the story in the present deals with the adult Afro making his way to the mountain top keep of the "Number One" to duel Justice, while at the same time the mysterious cult known as the "Empty Seven Clan" sends various agents to kill Afro and take his Number Two headband.

Izaki was always confident in school who had to work at being the best. It's very much a you get what you put in scenario. He's more than capable of rising to the task whether it's club or tennis. He also enjoys being contrary to others and seeing through their bullshit and bluster which is so refreshing. He doesn't even do it to show off, just because people's shallowness annoy him. Hakamada is the quiet one. Still waters run deep asiding from the fact he always seems to look vapid. He's the prodigy insomuch as things just come easily to him. He doesn't have to work or study and just manages to come out on top which is frustrating for Izaki who realizes he'll never reach that level no matter how hard he tries. So there's a bit of a rivalry between them but not so much because Izaki knows he's got no chance of catching up. Although, he doesn't realize that Hakamada was never competing with him. And then there's Hakamada's attraction which Izaki can't understand at all. 8 years after that. After a school reunion Izaki finds himself in a relationship he never agreed to with Hakamada, the guy he hated so much in high school. Hakamada is stone faced and unresponsive like he was back in school and it's interesting to see his awkward and sincere attempts to get close to Izaki who thinks he's just being used for sex.
